Mark Esset Clarifies Remarks on Blessing Osom, Apologises to Ikot Ekpene Women
Mark Udo Esset, the member representing Uyo/Uruan/Nsit Atai/Ibesikpo Asutan Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives Nigeria, has issued a formal clarification and apology following controversy over recent remarks concerning Blessing Osom and women from Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area.
In a statement released on 27 February 2026, the federal lawmaker acknowledged making an incorrect claim in a recent speech in which he said Blessing Osom was from Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area by marriage. He described the statement as a factual error and formally corrected the record.
Esset also addressed concerns that his comments may have been interpreted as derogatory toward women from Ikot Ekpene, stressing that this was not his intention.
“I wish to clarify that my remarks was not an attempt to disparage, insult, or undermine the dignity and integrity of Ikot Ekpene women,” he said.
The lawmaker emphasised that any interpretation suggesting he sought to malign women from the area did not reflect the context or substance of his speech. He reiterated his respect for women and commitment to civil public engagement.
“I hold the entirety of women in high regard and remain committed to respectful and issue-based public discourse,” he added.
Esset expressed regret over the controversy generated by the remarks and apologised to the people of Ikot Ekpene and the general public for any misunderstanding or discomfort caused.
The clarification comes amid public reactions to the earlier speech, with the lawmaker seeking to reassure constituents and observers that his comments were not intended to offend or undermine any group.
