Nigeria’s Tourism Industry Gathers Momentum as Akwa Ibom Set to Host FTAN 2025 Convention

The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has announced that its 2025 Governing Council Meeting and national convention will be held in Akwa Ibom State from May 21st to 24th, in a major move aimed at boosting regional tourism and industry collaboration.

FTAN President, Mr. Nkereuwem Onung

FTAN President, Mr. Nkereuwem Onung, made the announcement during a world press briefing held on Thursday, describing Akwa Ibom as “a rising star in Africa’s tourism landscape.” The state was selected as host due to its growing reputation as a cultural and ecological destination, and its increasing investment in tourism infrastructure.

The multi-day convention will bring together key stakeholders from over 23 professional associations, including tour operators, hospitality practitioners, festival promoters, and tourism consultants. The event will feature high-level engagements such as the FTAN Governing Council Meeting, a Tourism Stakeholders Gala, and the “Experience Ibom” cultural and heritage tour.

“The choice of Akwa Ibom is deliberate. We want tourism stakeholders to experience firsthand the beauty, culture, and hospitality this state has to offer,” Onung said. He also praised the state government’s recent strides in preserving cultural heritage and supporting tourism events, such as the widely acclaimed Ibom Christmas Unplugged festival.

Mr. Onung, who also serves as an Adviser to the Governor on Tourism and is founder of Remlords Tours, emphasized the economic potential of the sector. “Tourism is not just about travel—it’s about creating jobs, promoting culture, and stimulating local economies,” he said.

Calling on the media for partnership, Onung urged journalists and tourism advocates to lend their support in promoting the FTAN convention. He also extended an invitation to potential sponsors, promising brand visibility and strategic mileage.
