Ibesikpo Asutan Stakeholders Demand Uyo Federal Seat in 2027
Stakeholders in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area have formally called for the opportunity to produce the next member of the House of Representatives for Uyo Federal Constituency in 2027, citing decades of political imbalance and exclusion.
The demand was made in a communiqué issued at the end of an enlarged stakeholders’ meeting held at Chief E. O. Eyo Memorial Square, Ediam, where political leaders, elders, women groups, youths, and opinion leaders from across the ten wards gathered to review the area’s political standing.
The meeting drew prominent stakeholders, including Hon. Iniobong Ekpeyong, former Chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan; Rt. Hon. Emayak Ukpong; Rt. Hon. Emmanuel Obot; Elder Ita Essien; Chief Etim Akpanudo; Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko; Mr. Daniel Bassey; and Mrs. Comfort Williams, among others. Otuekong T. O. Akpan served as Chairman of the occasion.
While commending Umo Eno for his development-driven leadership and visible projects in the area, the stakeholders unanimously endorsed him for a second term. They also pledged support for Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Godswill Akpabio.
However, the central focus of the meeting was the question of representation in Uyo Federal Constituency. Stakeholders noted that since 1999, Ibesikpo Asutan has had only four years of representation, with a brief eight-month stint through a court ruling, while other local government areas have enjoyed longer tenures.
Describing the situation as inequitable, they appealed to the governor, as leader of the party in the state, to support the emergence of a candidate from Ibesikpo Asutan in 2027. They argued that the local government, which has the second-largest voting strength in the constituency, has remained without fair representation for over 24 years despite its consistent political support.
The stakeholders also acknowledged growing backing from leaders in Uyo, Uruan, and parts of Nsit Atai, urging sister local government areas to reciprocate past support by backing Ibesikpo Asutan’s aspiration.
They emphasized that their demand is rooted in fairness, equity, and unity, pledging to pursue the course through peaceful and democratic means while sustaining consultations across the constituency.
