Governor Umo Eno has praised the Catholic Church for what he described as its unmatched role in humanitarian service, while outlining his administration’s own social support initiatives in Akwa Ibom State.
Speaking at the second plenary of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, hosted in Obot Akara by the Diocese of Ikot Ekpene, the governor said the Church remains the single largest non-governmental investor in education, healthcare and social support across the country.
He commended Bishop Camilus Umo of Ikot Ekpene Diocese for hosting the conference and welcomed bishops and clergy from across Nigeria.
Governor Eno highlighted what he called the Church’s example of “faith in action”, saying its work in uplifting communities has gone beyond the scope of government interventions. He added that his administration is committed to people-centred programmes that prioritise the welfare of all citizens.
Presenting the state’s humanitarian record, he said 206 homes have already been built for widows and vulnerable people under the ARISE Compassionate Homes scheme, out of a target of 500. He also noted that 477,000 households have benefitted from two phases of the free food distribution programme.
Other initiatives mentioned include the creation of a Ministry of Humanitarian Services, the ARISE Care for the Elderly project, and expanded support schemes for disadvantaged groups.
“These interventions reflect our shared mission with the Church – to care for the vulnerable, bring hope to the needy, and ensure no one is left behind,” the governor said.
The plenary was attended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Archbishop Michael Francis Crotty, the President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria, Archbishop Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, and several bishops and priests.
Governor Eno reaffirmed that his administration would continue to partner with the Catholic Church and other faith-based organisations to build a compassionate and inclusive society.
