State House Speaker Defect to APC in Major Political Shake-Up
A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) House of Assembly Speaker has announced his defection to All Progressive Party(APC) in a significant political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The announcement was made during plenary on Thursday, marking a decisive shift in the state’s legislative leadership.
Agbebaku’s defection was accompanied by several other lawmakers who also crossed over to the APC, signaling deepening fractures within the PDP in Edo State.
Meanwhile, in a parallel development in neighboring Delta State, 22 lawmakers—including the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor—also announced their defection from the PDP to the APC. The mass defection took place in Asaba, the state capital, and has sent ripples across the country’s political landscape.
The twin defections represent a major blow to the PDP’s influence in the South-South region, traditionally a stronghold for the opposition party. Analysts say the moves could be a precursor to wider shifts ahead of the 2027 elections, as political loyalties realign at state and national levels.
Neither the PDP nor the APC has released an official statement on the defections as of the time of filing this report.
