Christmas Unplugged: Etinan chairman showcases historic sites and supports local traders
The Chairman of Etinan Local Government Area, Hon. Uko Umoh, has highlighted several historic landmarks in the area during Etinan Day celebrations at the ongoing Christmas Unplugged festival in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.
Among the sites presented were the Qua Iboe Church founded in 1898, the first ceramic factory (1991)in the area, a leprosy hospital(1932), Etinan Institute (1915)and the country home of the state’s first civilian governor, Akpan Isemin.
The chairman said the sites reflect Etinan’s rich historical and cultural heritage.
Hon. Umoh called on the Commissioner for Tourism, Dr Anieti Udofia, to ensure the formal listing of the locations as recognised tourist destinations in Etinan.
He also thanked the state governor for providing what he described as an atmosphere that promotes unity and cultural exchange across Akwa Ibom.
Today we have come to show the world what we have, whether in food, culture or the things we are known for, he said, expressing appreciation to organisers and participants.
During the Etinan Day celebrations, the chairman visited stalls operated by all Etinan indigenes at the Christmas Village. The visit was aimed at encouraging local traders who are using the platform to display and sell their products.
Ekom from Ekpene Ukpa village, a trader in the Xmas Village praised the chairman’s gesture, describing it as a sign of his commitment to develop small scale entrepreneurs in Etinan Local Government Area. She also thanked the chairman for supporting his business financially.
