At 75, Ikot Ekpene Sets Stage for Landmark Anniversary Celebration
Ikot Ekpene Local Government Area has unveiled an ambitious lineup of activities to mark its 75th anniversary, with Chairman Rt. Hon. Aniefiok Nkom setting the tone for a year-long diamond jubilee that celebrates the council’s historic legacy while positioning it for future growth.
Nkom made this known on Saturday during a World Press Briefing held at the Local Government Secretariat, where he formally flagged off the year-long diamond jubilee celebration themed, “Celebrating Heritage, Inspiring the Future, Making the First, the Best.”
He described the anniversary as a time for reflection and renewed commitment, noting that Ikot Ekpene, established on April 11, 1951, holds a unique place in history as the first premier local government area in the former British West Africa.
“Being first is a privilege. Staying first is a responsibility,” the council boss said, adding that the area has remained a centre of cultural heritage, economic activity and community strength over the years.
Nkom said the celebration would spark wider conversations on the past, present and future of Ikot Ekpene, popularly known as the Raffia City, while also drawing the attention of investors and development partners.
He explained that the jubilee would run from April to December 2026 and would feature activities aimed at showcasing the area’s heritage and boosting its economic potential.
According to him, the programme includes the official flag-off and press launch in April, a historic coronation and installation of a Paramount Ruler later in the year, and a grand finale in December with the commissioning of the Ikot Ekpene Local Government Shopping Mall, expected to boost commercial activities.
Other highlights of the finale, he said, will include an exhibition of indigenous products and crafts, as well as an awards ceremony to honour notable indigenes who have contributed to the development of the area.
The chairman also disclosed ongoing infrastructure projects, including a modern shopping complex and the Raffia Mall along major routes within the council, noting that they are aimed at stimulating economic growth and attracting investors.
He added that the jubilee is designed to raise Ikot Ekpene’s profile, attract investment in key sectors such as commerce, agriculture and the creative industry, promote cultural heritage, and strengthen collaboration among stakeholders.
Nkom called on residents, indigenes in the diaspora, investors and the media to support and take part in the celebration.
“To our investors, the doors of Ikot Ekpene are open. To our sons and daughters, your land needs your talent and resources,” he said, urging the media to continue projecting a positive image of the area.
He stressed that the anniversary is not just a celebration, but a statement of renewed purpose.
In his remarks, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, Mr. Nsibiet John commended Nkom for drawing attention to the historical importance of the local government.
John said the anniversary offers an opportunity to reflect on the council’s progress and future direction, and urged political stakeholders to work together for the development of the area.
He also called for the inclusion of media professionals in the planning process and advocated recognition for journalists who have contributed to the growth of the local government.
