ASUP Akwapoly Names New Shopping Mall After State Accountant General Andrew Essien

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Akwa Ibom Polytechnic Chapter, has named its proposed shopping mall project after the Akwa Ibom State Accountant General ; Andrew Essien in recognition of his support and contributions towards the development of the institution and the union’s initiatives.

The announcement was made by the Chairman of ASUP, Akwa Poly Chapter, Comr ESV Nyeneime Raphael, during the union’s first general meeting of 2026, where she outlined ongoing projects, achievements, and plans aimed at improving staff welfare and strengthening the union.

She disclosed that the ASUP shopping mall project, which commenced on January 15, 2026, has progressed to the damp proof course level, describing it as a strategic investment designed to generate additional revenue for the welfare of members when completed. 

According to her, the project is being funded through union dues as well as donations from management and well-meaning individuals within and outside the Polytechnic community.

Raphael also used the opportunity to commend members for their solidarity and resilience, noting that the new year presents an opportunity for renewed commitment and collective progress. 

She highlighted the successful conclusion of negotiations with the Akwa Ibom State Government on salary adjustments for tertiary institution staff, which resulted in increases to basic salaries for academic staff effective January 1, 2026.

The ASUP chairman encouraged members to continue supporting union initiatives and to visit the project site to observe ongoing construction, expressing optimism that the shopping mall, named after the state Accountant General, would stand as a lasting legacy and contribute significantly to the welfare of members and the growth of the institution.
