Akwa Ibom Sports Festival: MOC Holds Draw for Team Sports

The draw for all team sports of the upcoming 2025 Akwa Ibom State Sports Festival has been held.

At a brief but colourful ceremony held today, Thursday, at the Business Lounge of Godswill Akpabio Stadium, and attended by members of the inter-ministerial committee which is also the Main Organizing Committee – MOC, of the games, as well as Supervisors for Youth and Sports of the thirty-one LGAs of the state, the draw, held on the basis of federal constituency, sprung up interesting ties.

Ibesikpo Asutan and Uyo renew old rivalry straight away on day one, Obot Akara face off against Essien Udim, while Ikot Abasi and Mkpat Enin will set out to properly adjudicate matters when the games get under way.

Elsewhere, Onna will keep a date with Esit Eket, Oron take on Mbo, while Ikot Ekpene, Eastern Obolo, Nsit Ibom, Abak, and Urue-offong/Oruko all drew bye and are exempt from day-one action.

In his remarks, the chairman of the MOC and Commissioner for Sports, Elder Paul Bassey, stated that the draw was a one-off for all team sports, explaining that the fixtures will be maintained for all five team sports of the festival.

“These fixtures will stand the same for all five team sports of volleyball, basketball, football, beach volleyball, and handball, and in the male, female, junior and senior categories.” “Competition venues and dates will be released in due course.” He said.

“Arrivals will take place on Sunday, September 7, opening ceremony on Monday, September 8, while competition begins on Tuesday, September 9.” “Accommodation and basic amenities like security, water and power supply have been provided at Cornelia Connelly College, Uyo, and Lutheran High School, Obot Idim, both of which have been selected as camp sites.” Mr Bassey added.

The ceremony was also attended by the Commissioner for Youth Development – Dr Ekerete Ekanem, Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare – Mrs Inibehe Silas, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports – Mrs Rosemary Ubia, and management staff of the ministry, the Technical Director, Athletics Federation of Nigeria – Coach Gabriel Okon, the chairman of Akwa Ibom State Football Association – Mr Samuel Umoh, and his board members, among other personalities.
