Akwa Ibom NLC Issues 24-Hour Ultimatum to Governor Over Minimum Wage
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Akwa Ibom State has issued a 24-hour ultimatum to Governor Umo Eno to implement the new minimum wage or face a state-wide strike on Wednesday. NLC State Chairman, Sunny James, announced this in a communique on monday expressing the union’s resolve to ensure workers in the state receive the approved N80,000 minimum wage.
Addressing the media, James emphasized that the NLC is committed to protecting the rights and welfare of workers in Akwa Ibom State. He stressed that failure to meet the union’s demand would result in industrial action, which could potentially cripple vital sectors of the state’s economy.
The ultimatum follows recent announcements by Kebbi and Akwa Ibom state governments approving N75,000 and N80,000 minimum wages for their civil servants, respectively. The NLC applauded these states for taking bold steps towards improving workers’ welfare and urged other state governments to follow suit.
As the deadline looms, all eyes are on the Akwa Ibom State government to respond to the NLC’s ultimatum and avoid a potentially crippling strike.
