APC Etinan in Disarray over Akwa Ibom Governor Defection Rumors
The Etinan chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is embroiled in internal chaos as rumors of Governor Umo Eno’s alleged defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC send shockwaves through the local political landscape.
In a fiery disclaimer issued on Tuesday, the APC leadership in Etinan disowned a planned “Elders and Stakeholders” meeting billed for Wednesday, May 21, at the Etinan Guest House branding it illegal, unauthorized, and a dangerous act of insubordination.
Party insiders say the brewing discontent stems from growing fears that PDP defectors loyal to the Governor could hijack APC structures in the state, particularly in strongholds like Etinan.
Recently, Isreal Tommy, the chapter chairman of APC in Etinan in company of other stakeholders appointed Hon. Ini Obot the Political Leader of Etinan to stern PDP effect ahead of the rumored defection of Pastor Umo Eno to APC.
The controversial meeting, reportedly convened without the knowledge of the chapter leadership, was allegedly aimed at strategizing to protect entrenched interests ahead of the potential political crossover.
“This is an act of sabotage,” said one high-ranking APC member who requested anonymity. “Some people want to create a parallel structure that will hand over the party to outsiders. We won’t let that happen.”
The official statement, jointly signed by Chapter Chairman Comrade Israel Tommy and Secretary Comrade Utibe Constant, warned that any APC member who participates in the meeting does so “at his or her own peril” and risks immediate disciplinary action, including suspension or expulsion.
Security agencies including the Police, DSS, and Civil Defence have been placed on alert to monitor the situation, with the APC chapter leadership calling for the immediate shutdown of the planned meeting venue.
Political analysts say the turmoil reflects broader anxieties within the APC over the implications of Governor Eno’s rumored defection. While no official confirmation has been made, the possibility of a sitting PDP governor aligning with the opposition has sparked a fierce struggle for influence, particularly among local powerbrokers who fear marginalization.
“Etinan is a critical base,” said one analyst. “If the Governor joins APC, everyone wants to make sure they’re not left out of the realignment. That’s what this panic is about.”
