Akwa Ibom State Police Command Announces Third-Party Insurance Enforcement
In a statement released by DSP Timfon John, LLB, Anipr, the Police Public Relations Officer for the Akwa Ibom State Command on January 14, 2025, the Command announced its intention to commence enforcement of third-party vehicle insurance compliance across the state beginning on February 1st, 2025.
The enforcement is in accordance with Section 68 of the Insurance Act and Section 312 of the 1945 Motor Vehicle (Third Party Insurance) Act, which legally requires all vehicle owners to possess valid third-party insurance before operating their vehicles on public roads.
DSP John emphasized that the exercise aims to protect road users, ensure accountability, and promote compliance with traffic laws. Vehicles found without valid third-party insurance will be seized and taken to the nearest police formation, with release contingent upon presentation of valid insurance documents.
The Command issued a strict warning to participating officers to maintain professionalism and avoid any form of misconduct, particularly extortion, which would result in severe disciplinary action.
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command appealed to all vehicle owners to comply with this legal obligation to avoid inconveniences and reiterated its commitment to fostering safety, enforcing the rule of law, and enhancing public trust in its operations across the state.
