Government Remains Silent as Fuel Prices Soar in Akwa Ibom
The Nigerian Government, along with the Akwa Ibom State Government, has remained silent on the matter of increasing fuel (PMS) prices in the state, caused by a strike action by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).
NUPENG is a labour union that represents the interests of workers in the oil and gas industry in Nigeria. NUPENG is known for taking industrial action, like strikes, to protest against issues such as poor working conditions, low pay, harassing and lack of job security.
The strike, which began due to an alleged assault on a tanker driver by a military officer along the Ikot Abasi road in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area, has led to indefinite industrial action from NUPENG without following the usual notification procedures.
As a result, PMS prices have soared from N1,350 to N1,700 per litre, depending on the location. As of today, few filling stations are open for business, and black market vendors are taking advantage of the situation to profit.
The silence from the government has only added to the frustration and anxiety felt by residents of the state.
