ADC FACTION CAUTIONS ATIKU OVER ALLEGED USE OF FOREIGN COURT AGAINST TINUBU
A faction of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by its National Chairman, Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, has cautioned former Vice President Atiku Abubakar against allegedly taking legal action against President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in a foreign court.
The faction, in a statement issued on Sunday, August 31, 2026, said grievances involving the democratically elected President of Nigeria should be pursued through Nigerian laws and institutions.
The statement followed an emergency joint session of the faction’s Board of Trustees and National Working Committee, where it also accused some individuals of fraudulently using the identity, logo and symbols of the ADC.
While recognising the right of every Nigerian to seek legal redress, the Nafiu Bala Gombe-led leadership said taking proceedings involving a sitting Nigerian President to a foreign jurisdiction could undermine Nigeria’s sovereignty and international image.
“While we recognize every citizen’s right to legal recourse, the ADC insists that grievances against the democratically elected President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, must be ventilated within the ambit of Nigerian laws and institutions,” the statement said.
The faction described the alleged move by Atiku to institute legal proceedings against President Tinubu in a foreign jurisdiction as “unpatriotic, shameful, and a direct affront to Nigeria’s national security and interest.”
It further accused the former Vice President of attempting to internationalise domestic political issues for personal political interests.
The faction also warned Atiku against allegedly presenting himself as the ADC’s presidential candidate, insisting that he should not drag the party into what it described as his personal political battles.
“We hereby serve Alhaji Atiku Abubakar notice to desist forthwith from parading himself as, or speaking for, the ADC presidential candidate,” the statement added.
The Nafiu-led ADC leadership also dismissed reports of possible alliances, mergers or coalitions involving the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It said the ADC would remain an independent political party and would not allow any individual or group to hijack its platform.
“The African Democratic Congress is NOT, and will NOT be, in any alliance, merger, or coalition with any political party ahead of the 2027 elections,” the faction stated.
The group called on the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, security agencies and members of the public to take note of its resolutions.
The statement was signed by Hon. Nafiu Bala Gombe, who identified himself as the National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress.
