Former NDDC Sole Administrator Effiong Akwa plots to replace Deputy Governor Eyakenyi
Speculation within Akwa Ibom’s political space has grown with claims that former NDDC Sole Administrator, Effiong Okon Akwa, may be seeking a strategic political repositioning that could see him challenge or replace Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi.
Years after overseeing a forensic audit critics say failed to deliver transparency or tangible outcomes, and following a tenure as sole administrator that drew accusations of non-accountability and no project impact in Akwa Ibom State, Effiong Okon Akwa now faces mounting scrutiny that he is lobbying with billions of naira to replace Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi.
A source familiar with the political manoeuvrings alleged that a series of meetings had been held with selected stakeholders in the Oro axis, aimed at creating the impression that Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi lacks the backing of Oro people.
The source further claimed that there were discussions about leaking information purportedly originating from the deputy governor’s camp, suggesting strained relations with Governor Umo Eno.
Sources involved in the ongoing political consultations also pointed to emerging arguments around zoning and power balance, noting that Senator Martin Esin is believed to come from the same political bloc as Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi.
According to the sources, some stakeholders are reportedly considering approaching Governor Umo Eno with proposals to “spread political power” by replacing Eyakenyi with former NDDC Sole Administrator Effiong Akwa, although there has been no official confirmation of such plans.
