Equity or Injustice? Fresh Agitation Demands Itu-Oma Must Produce 2027 Assembly Member for Itu State Constituency

Questions around equity and political justice are taking centre stage in Itu Local Government Area, as fresh agitation grows insisting that Itu-Oma must produce the next representative of Itu State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly in 2027, ending what many describe as decades of political exclusion.
Since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999, Itu LGA has operated within three recognised geo-political zones — West Itam, East Itam, and Itu-Oma. However, available political records show that while West Itam and East Itam have produced representatives for the constituency across multiple tenures, Itu-Oma has yet to occupy the legislative seat.
Historical trends indicate that representation has largely rotated between West Itam and East Itam from 1999 to date. East Itam notably held the seat for three consecutive terms between 2003 and 2015, while West Itam has also occupied the position across several tenures and is projected to complete another cycle by 2027.
The development is fueling conversations around fairness, inclusiveness, and political balance within the local government area. Political observers argue that equitable power rotation strengthens unity, promotes a sense of belonging, and deepens democratic values at the grassroots.
Stakeholders across Itu LGA are increasingly being urged to prioritise justice, equity, and collective progress in future political decisions. There is also growing emphasis on resisting misinformation and divisive narratives capable of undermining efforts toward balanced representation.
Many community voices maintain that giving Itu-Oma the opportunity to represent the constituency would reinforce the principle that fairness in leadership rotation is critical to sustainable peace, development, and shared prosperity.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, the conversation continues to gain momentum, with political actors, community leaders, women groups, and youth organisations being encouraged to support initiatives that promote equity and inclusiveness across all zones in Itu Local Government Area.
